Hi, Guys, I am returning to NZ later this year and will be bringing my Supertwin Top Gas Bike back with me. I am trying to find out just how Customs will "value" the bike for duty etc. Any help / info would be appreciated.

Hi Welcome to our little place. I hope that maybe Ian W might be able to ask his contacts in shipping and find the info for you. We need more new bikes joining us. Richard

Hi don.irvine I just had a call from Athol Williams and he says that you will only be charged the GST (which is 12,5% here) on the declaired value of your race bike. Hope this helps. Tony A.

Hi, Ian and Tony, Thanks for that - but the question really is - how is the "declared value" established? If I state a "price paid" 5 or 6 years ago, is there any depreciation allowed? or do I have to put a "price" value on it now? or is it what some one else thinks it is worth (or "valued") at? |

| Speak to whoever is shipping the bike for you, or call NZ Customs directly. I would expect they will want to see some kind of invoice. As has been said there is no duty, just GST. |

With a bike like that the NZ customs will not have any way to figure it's value as it is custom built.Simply put it down as a homebuilt custom bike and declare the value as minimal as you think you can get away with. Valuation verification in NZ is easily arranged with any number of our trade contacts here at a figure you come up with so don't be too concerned.Who are you shipping it with? Several of us here have shipping contacts which may be of some use to you. Regards, Ian |

Hi, again, guys, Thanks for all the info - it would appear that I should get away with it - I have owned / built the bike for more than 21 months, I've put an insurance value of £3000 on it for shipping - but I am a NZ citizen, and it will be for personal use, I am using Pickfords for shipping, direct to Hamilton, should be arriving mid-late January 2010. I'll have two other bikes in the container as well - a 1993 Moto Guzzi California and a 1978 Yamaha XS750 - so they will all be checked out together. |

Just make sure you water blast the hell out of them and get every spec of dirt from under gaurds etc. Tires need to be spotless clean as well. You will have more trouble with M.A.F than you will with customs. They may frown upon another moto guzzi coming into the country though |

Just noticed that it's a year since my first post - well, I'm here now, the bike has been tech'ed, I now have a Kiwi Competition licence - bring on the season !!!
On a more serious note, just exactly what procedure do I have to follow to enter myself and bike at a meeting?
P.S. the Guzzi is here and fully street legal! |

Hi Depends on which meeting you are thinking off going to. Have a look at the NZDRA calendar and let me know which meeting you are going to attend and I will run you through what to do. Mind you this season might be a bit of a disorganized affair...there are difficult times ahead for Drag racing in NZ I think. Richard
